Medical Surgical Services

In 2016, a total of 906 surgeries were performed at the Holy Family Surgery Center. Of those, 690 surgeries were performed by brigades (349 orthopedic; 169 general; 93 ear, nose, and throat; 24 gynecology; 26 ophthalmology; 29 urology). The other 216 surgeries (all orthopedic) were performed by the Holy Family Surgery Center on-site team.

The surgery center is staffed by volunteer international and Honduran health care professionals who provide surgical care and improve global health education. Below is a list of the medical surgical services that we offer.


  • Fracture fixation both upper and lower extremities
  • Knee arthroscopy with ACL reconstruction
  • Knee arthroscopy with meniscal repairs
  • Shoulder arthroscopy with rotator, slap repairs
  • Foot and ankle surgeries including bunionectomies, fusions, deformity correction
  • Hand, wrist, and elbow surgeries including carpal tunnel release, deformity correction, fusions


  • Hernia repairs (umbilical, inguinal, ventral)
  • Lapararoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Various mass excisions
  • Hemorrhoidectomy
  • Excision pilonidal Cyst


  • Tympanoplasty
  • Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy
  • Septoplasty

  • Insertion of pressure equalization (PE) tubes

  • Vaginal hysterectomies

  • Cataracts
  • Pterygium (a non-cancerous growth of the clear, thin tissue (conjunctiva) that lays over the white part of the eye¬†(sclera)) removal
  • Strabismus (cross eyes) correction
  • Entropion (the turning in of the edges of the eyelid, usually the lower eyelid, so that the lashes rub against the eye surface) correction
  • Trichiasis (eyelid abnormality — the misdirection of eyelashes toward the globe) correction
  • Ectropion (the turning out of the eyelid (usually the lower eyelid) so that the inner surface is exposed) correction
  • Eyelid Mass excision
  • Chalazion (a small bump in the eyelid caused by a blockage of a tiny oil gland) excision
